Muir Beach, California, August 2nd-5th, 2024
Evolution of Life, Yama, Niyama, Asana, and Pranayama Track
Program
Join DRK and a community of like-minded individuals for a transformative journey of yoga in the breathtaking serenity of the Green Gulch Farm Zen Center.
This track of the Yoga of Body, Breath, Mind, and Lifestyle (BBML) starts with the discussion of the evolution of life. We study the major evolutionary events and the forces and processes that caused them, from the beginning of life through the development, birth, and the life of a human being. This study equips us with the foundational concepts and knowledge that enable us to understand the scientific underpinning of:
- Yama (social responsibilities)
- Niyama (personal responsibilities)
- Asana (postures) and
- Pranayama (breathing and energy control) in yoga.
We will discuss and analyze the following important concepts and methods of yoga scientifically to gain expanded and deeper insight into them:
- Prakriti (matter) and Purusha (universal consciousness)
- Samsara (the wheel of birth, life, death, and rebirth)
- Samskara (the accumulation of the consequences of our deeds throughout our lives)
- Subtle body and Panchakosha (five layers/sheaths: Physical, energy, knowledge, mind, and bliss)
- Muscle strengths and flexibility with focus on the role of nervous system
- Individual constitution, health, and nutrition according to the complementary western and Ayurveda principles
- Lifestyle and its personal and social impacts
Consistent with the traditional emphasis of yoga on practice, we will practice what we study throughout the retreat.
Whether you’re a seasoned yogi or have just started your yoga practice, this retreat will advance your practice, will deepen your understanding of yoga, and will enhance your awareness of your Body, Breath, Mind, and Lifestyle.

Venue
The Green Gulch Farm Zen Center, nestled in the lush Marin County near Muir Beach, California, offers a serene retreat from the bustling city life. Known also as the Green Dragon Temple (Soryu-ji), this 115-acre sanctuary lies just north of San Francisco, opening out onto the expansive Pacific Ocean. Acquired in 1972 with a commitment to public access and agricultural education, Green Gulch is surrounded by the rich biodiversity of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.
Historically significant, the center was influenced by the pioneering horticulturist Alan Chadwick, who introduced biodynamic farming techniques here. His legacy continues through the center’s vibrant organic vegetable and flower gardens, which not only support the local community but also supply produce to markets and restaurants in San Francisco. Visitors and aspiring organic farmers alike are drawn to Green Gulch for its peaceful environment and its dedication to sustainability and learning.
